One of the world's most famous golf resorts, Quinta do Lago is part of a resort area favoured by members of the international jet set, and is bordered by the «Ria Formosa Natural Park». These two eighteen-hole courses at Quinta do Lago offer different challenges. The terrain is similar on both courses, based on sandy Algarvean soil covered with pine trees, heather, broom and many beautiful wild flowers. The Quinta do Lago Course hosted the Portuguese Open seven times. It favours long hitters, but requires the player to pick a particular route to score well. Although both anti-clockwise loops, the first nine favours a draw, while the second favours a fade from the tee. Holes 3, 15 and 17 feature lakes which must be negotiated. The fifteenth par 3 of 200 metres/220 yards is one of golf's most photographed holes. carry of some 180 metres accross a lake to a green with a bunker on the left and trees on the right. A good long iron or a wood is required if the wind is blowing. Holes 8, 10, 15 and 18 are the most testing for the scratch player. The eighteenth, a par 4 of 413 metres/450 yards is a very testing finishing hole. The long hitter can try to carry the bunkers on the left, but must beware of running out of room on the right, as the hole doglegs left. The second is to a slightly elevated green bunkered left and right. The holes 2, 3, 5, 12, 13, and 17 offer the best possibilities of birdies. The course is an enjoyable experience for players of all standards. The Ria Formosa Course has four great par 5 holes requiring power and accuracy to play them well, also providing superb views. The par 3 holes are all influenced by the wind, hole 14 a par 3 is outstanding. It is played from an elevated tee, giving exposure to the wind. This medium length features a figure-eight-shaped green with a tier across the waist. Bunkers left and right, and banks front and rear, make this a very good test wherever the flag is positioned. The par 4's have all dogleg fairways except for holes 10 and 13. The thirteenth, a par 4 of 374 metres/409 yards needs a drive of 200 metres/220 yards to see the bottom of the flag on this testing driving hole. A bunker on the right (at 210 metres/221 yards) makes length and accuracy a must to set up a short iron approach. A bunker on the left and banking to the right make this long green no "give-away" to hit. Precision driving is vital to set up the chance of a low score. Lakes on holes 13 and 18 claim many victims. The course favours the player who can draw the ball. Quinta do Lago Course was designed by William Mitchell in 1974. The first nine holes of Ria Formosa Course were designed by William Mitchell in 1974, the second nine by Joseph Lee and William Roquemore in 1989. The clubhouse is luxuriously comfortable with its own lounge, bar and restaurant. It is sited near the starting point of all possible combinations. Two resident professionals are on hand to teach or refresh the game of anyone in need of expert assistance. "A golfing, tennis, horseriding, watersports paradise all year-round" is a fitting description of Quinta do Lago, where temperatures are mild even in winter and the hottest summer's day is comfortably cooled by sea breezes. Yet, to many, Quinta do Lago's outstanding feature is, by far, its golfing facilities which have long since earned, for the estate, the international acclaim it deserves. Quinta do Lago ranks among Europe's finest courses. There are four eighteen-hole courses located within the perimeters of the Quinta do Lago estate: the 36 holes of the Quinta do Lago and Ria Formosa courses, 18 holes of San Lorenzo and the newest addition 18 holes of the Pinheiros Altos. This total of 72 holes makes Quinta do Lago the largest golf resort in Europe and accounts for more than 30 percent of golf in the Algarve.

2. Pinheiros Altos Campo de Golfe

Situated on the beautiful Portuguese coast and adjoining the famous Quinta do Lago estate, Pinheiros Altos is making its name as the ultimate golf development on the Algarve. Based in the lovely Ria Formosa Nature Reserve is an excellent 18-hole championship golf course, the development is being aimed at the dedicated golfer and has some of the finest golf facilities that the Algarve has to offer. Purchasers of property at Pinheiros Altos have special facilities in the superb clubhouse and preferential access to the Golf Academy which offers instruction to all levels of golfers - from beginners to the accomplished players. Pinheiros Altos is one of the most distinctive courses on the Algarve. The golf course has two contrasting nines of play laid out against a backdrop of the Ria Formosa nature reserve on the Atlantic's edge and the orange groves of the Ludo Valley: holes 1 to 9 "The Pines" are played over undulating terrain and through a forest of umbrella pines. Pine trees indeed line the fairways throughout, often quite tightly, demanding precise tee shots. It is some 400 metres/440 yards longer than the back nine, and most of this difference is held in the extreme changes of elevation as the course swoops down valleys and over hills. The back nine "The Lakes", is truly drastically different from "The Pines. Its flat terrain and lakes, which come into play on seven holes, call up visions of many a Florida course. This side is shorter, easier and less interesting than the front. There is usually ample room to bail out in the fairways, and even into some distinguished rough on the opposite side of the water, to the extent of almost taking these hazards out of play. Still, it is not without its challenges. The key holes at Pinheiros Altos are the 5th, 8th and 11th hole. Hole 5 is a beautiful but dangerous and demanding par 3. Over a pine-filled valley onto a split-level green, this hole requires anything from an 8 iron to an 4 iron depending on the wind and the pin position. Having found the green, two-putts are not a formality and a par is always a relief on this hole. no. 8, worth a stroke index 1, this par 5 is difficult all the way from the tight tee shot, through the dogleg uphill second shot and into the elevated and undulating green. This is definitely a "get past it without a disaster hole". no. 11, a superb par 4 with a slightly uphill tee shot through a valley lined on both sides by pine trees. The second shot is downhill and often from a hanging lie which makes the heavily bunkered green difficult to find. It is a pleasure to play this hole, no matter what you score. Pinheiros Altos has a nicely appointed clubhouse with a lovely dining patio overlooking the course. Nine-hole rounds can be played after 4 PM. Other amenities include: All Water Sports. Riding. Bird-Watching at local Nature Reserve. Plans for a Health Spa with freehold apartments on "The Pines" site are being drawn up. Pinheiros Altos Spa and Country Club will provide a wide range of first class fitness, sports and relaxation facilities and membership will be available to all residents. The Spa will be built to the highest standards and will enable Pinheiros Altos to offer a range of leisure activities unequalled in the Algarve. Courses nearby: Quinta do Lago, São Lourenço.

The course's impeccable upkeep and its rare beauty make this an attractive challenge for any player.
