Set on the south bank of the river «Tejo» (Tagus) just a few minutes from Lisbon, Aroeira is a course that perfectly reconciles the requirements of a championship course whilst being set in a beautiful landscape. The Aroeira course skilfully blends the needs of a championship course and the harmonious surroundings of natural landcape. The course runs through a pine wood sprinkled with wild flowers and inhabited by many kinds of birds; it is a genuine natural park. An English writer named this the "Wentworth of Lisbon", and went on to describe the similarities between Aroeira and famous Wentworth. Set in a 345-hectare/852-acre estate very close to Costa da Caparica, which has a long beach with 30 kilometres of white sand, Aroeira has become one of the most famous golf courses in the country, with the advantage of being only 20 minutes from Lisbon, on the south bank of the river Tejo. On a clear day one can see the Portuguese capital from the tee of hole number 1. The course, a typical par 72 (36+36), provides a wide variety of play, players usually having to use almost all their clubs. On the first round, hole number 8 stands out, with its par 3 for 190 metres/209 yards and a green with a remarkable slope. On the second round, the highlight is hole number 11, a par 4, which was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones Sr. From here the tee-off is a blind shot into a narrow fairway with trees on both sides. It is followed by a spectacular approach to a green closely protected by water and bunkers, which reminds one of hole number 11 at Augusta National where the US Masters is played every year. Aroeira hosted the Portuguese Open in 1996 and will be the venue in 1997 and 1998 of the PGA European Tour and it is the home of the PGA European Tour. A second eighteen-hole course, designed by Donald Steel, is in the planning stage and will be open for play in 1999 containing six lakes, fairway bunkers and five tees. Hotels will be open in 2000. Other amenities include: Tennis courts, horse riding.
